General Luna is the tourist center of Siargao and is home to the internationally famous, and challenging, Cloud 9 surf break at its northern extremity. Embracing the southeast corner of Siargao Island, General Luna sits behind a long barrier reef, which affords excellent shallow-water sports activities, such as stand up paddleboard and snorkeling, as well as kilometers of almost untouched white sand beaches. General Luna is also the starting point for island-hopping trips out to Daku, Naked and Guyam islands – favorites for those who want to just lay on a pristine white sand beach akin to a castaway.
Scuba diving is a relatively new sport in Siargao and headquartered in General Luna but there are many dive spots choose from, more being discovered every year and some that are simply spectacular, such as the Blue Cathedral.
General Luna is also where the majority of Siargao culinary adventures start. Since the early days, when Cloud 9 was discovered by Australian surfers, three decades ago, restaurants of every theme and flavor have popped up along the road to the surf break. Catering predominantly to surfers and backpackers, menus are frequently filled with healthy options and offer good value for money.
For those surfing, Cloud 9 is not the only break of international standard. There are others, farther out along the reef to the southeast and to the northeast, such as Stimpies. All the breaks off Siargao are powered by the Pacific Ocean swells and when there is a storm to the East, between Palau and Siargao, the breaks can be dramatic and fulfilling. If a storm is targeting Samar Island (North of Siargao) then the offshore breeze will hold the wave crests high and keep the slopes long and smooth. Surfing competitions generally take place March through May and at the end of September – when the Pacific storms are most likely to generate the best conditions.
